One of the Widest Bucks in Georgia? An Incredible South Georgia Rut Hunt
Written by Michael Lee, Lethal® Brand Manager, Host of Backwoods Life, and lifelong hunter with 35+ years of experience across the United States
December in South Georgia is a special time for deer hunters. The temperatures finally drop, the rut reaches its peak, and mature bucks begin covering serious ground in search of does. That's exactly the scenario we found ourselves in during this unforgettable whitetail hunt.
With hunting season in full swing, we head to a great creek bottom setup to take advantage of the increased deer movement. This hunt would also be a great opportunity to put our new see-through blind to the test. The blind provides excellent concealment while allowing us to see every bit of movement around us without alerting nearby deer.
The Perfect Rut Hunting Setup
Trey Wetherington slipped into position on the edge of a large South Georgia creek bottom known for holding deer throughout the season. Even late into the year, plenty of acorns were still falling, making this area a major feeding destination for whitetails.
The combination of food, cover, and active rutting behavior made this location a prime spot for encountering a mature buck. With cold December temperatures settling in and ideal hunting conditions developing, expectations were high.
As the afternoon progressed, the woods began to come alive.
Deer Movement Starts Early
It didn't take long before deer started filtering through the area. Does and younger bucks moved through the creek bottom, feeding and traveling naturally as they searched for acorns beneath the towering hardwoods.
During the peak rut, every deer sighting raises anticipation because you never know when a mature buck might appear behind the next doe.
Then it happened.
A buck stepped into view that immediately grabbed Trey's attention.
A Super Wide South Georgia Buck
The deer wasn't just another mature buck—it carried an incredibly wide rack that stood out the moment it entered the opening.
As the buck worked through the timber, it became obvious that this was a special deer. The width of its antlers was impressive, and the longer Trey watched, the more he realized this buck could be one of the widest whitetails he's ever seen in Georgia.
With the buck moving through the area and offering opportunities, Trey had to make a decision.
Would this giant South Georgia whitetail present a shot?
See-Through Blind Advantage
One of the biggest advantages during this hunt was the use of the new see-through blind. Traditional blinds can sometimes limit visibility, especially when deer appear unexpectedly from multiple directions.
The see-through design allowed Trey to track deer movement continuously without excessive motion inside the blind. During rut hunts, when bucks can appear and disappear in seconds, having that extra visibility can make all the difference.
The blind helped maintain concealment while providing a clear view of the action unfolding throughout the afternoon.
South Georgia Rut Action at Its Best
There's something special about hunting South Georgia during December. The combination of cooler weather, abundant food sources, and peak rut activity creates opportunities for encounters with mature bucks that hunters dream about all year.
This hunt showcased exactly why rut hunting is so exciting. Deer movement was steady, bucks were actively searching for does, and every minute in the stand held the potential for something unforgettable.
When a giant wide-racked buck finally appeared, it turned an already exciting afternoon into a hunt we'll be talking about for years.
